It’s been a long wait for waves this season but the last 2 weeks have seen some consistent swells roll in. I’ve just got back from a great afternoon in El Palmar, water is still so warm (22ºc) I was in the water for a couple of hours without my wetsuit on. The babes are catching the rays on the beach – it’s pushing 28ºc. Our beach pad in Los Caños de Meca, Hotel Madreselva, closes for the season today – but hey guests can still enjoy the beach from our hotel in Vejer. Surf’s up! Don’t miss out. Llevamos unas semanas de tiempo magnifico y condiciones buenas para coger olas. He acabado de volver de una tarde estupenda en El Palmar. El agua esta todavía a 22ºc. y estuve un par de horas en el agua sin traje de neopreno. Una gozada. Hoy cerramos nuestro hotel in Los Caños, Hotel Madreselva hasta la temporada que viene. Pero se puede disfrutar de la playa desde nuestro hotel en Vejer. Aunque no surfeas no puedes perder la playa este otoño. Hasta pronto. Fotos cortesia de Magic Seaweed.
Take the coast road from Vejer past the windmills and long beaches of Tarifa to Algeciras. Jump on the train from here to Jimera de Libar and steam along an amazing track that shows off white villages and cuts through stunning gorges following the Guadiaro river. This is a truly spectacular day out. The trains are comfortable and on time. We left at 12.20 and arrived in Jimera for lunch at the fine ‘Quercus’ station restaurant (reservations: 952 180 041). After lunch we ambled up a pretty track following the river while collecting walnuts. A paddle with the girls then back on the train for the journey south. Fabulous! Coge la carretera desde Vejer pasando los molinos de viento y las playas largas de Tarifa hasta llegar a Algeciras. Aquí se encuentra el tren que parte hacia Jimera del Libar. El tren sigue una vía espectacular que sigue el río Guadiaro y pasa por las increíbles gargantas de las sierras de Grazalema. Salimos a las 12.20 y llegamos a Jimera a la hora de comer. Disfrutamos de un almuerzo muy agradable y bien atendido en ‘Quercus’ (reservas: 952 180 041) y después un paseo por la ribera del Guadiaro recogiendo nueces y disfrutando del frescor del río. There’s a lot more to do around Vejer mid-summer than just visiting our wonderful beaches and strolling around the old town with its scent of jasmine in the evening air. Just a five minute drive away is the hamlet of Santa Lucia, a natural spring wells up in the hills behind feeding the smallholdings and exotic gardens of this little oasis. The acueduct was built by the Romans and later improved by the Moors. There are the remains of seven mills to be seen as the water rushes down the hill. Kids love the walk down the water course (the entrance is hidden – just follow the track below the foot of the main acueduct past some semi-ruined thatched cottages and the flower and weed strewn path runs right into the old channel. Keep walking (slippery!) until a clearing on the right leads you out onto a track just above the Tajea restaurant. Perfect lunch stop!). Adults will love the stunning view from the top of the acueduct – careful with your footing!
Hay mucho más que hacer en Vejer de la Frontera a mediados del verano aparte de visitar nuestras maravillosas playas y pasear por el casco antiguo aromatizado por los jazmines de verano. A solo cinco minutos de Vejer en coche está la aldea de Santa Lucía, cuya manantial alimenta las huertas y jardines exóticos de este pequeño oasis. El acueducto fue construido por los romanos y más tarde mejorado por los moros. Todavía se ven los restos de los siete molinos que daban trabajo y riqueza al poblado. A los niños les encanta el paseo por el acueducto bajo que transcurre entre cañas y chumbos (la entrada está oculta – hay que seguir la pista por debajo de los pies del acueducto principal, pasar unas chozas semi – derruidas
y seguir el camino. La entrada esta tapada por ramas y hierbas. Sigue caminando (resbaladizo!) hasta un claro a la
derecha que te lleva a una pista justo al lado del restaurante La Tajea. Perfecto para almorzar!). Los adultos les va a gustar las impresionantes vistas desde la cima de el acueducto – cuidado con los pies – hay mucha altura!

Vejer’s longest fiesta is now under way. The ‘Velada’ is from the 10th. to the 24th. of August. The Casa del Califa has 6 traditional cisterns (algibes) of which two are now in use for storing water. The largest cistern has been relined and restored last week. Below are the definitions for the word in english (origins are greek) and for the spanish (origins are arab). This cistern is at least 600 years old but possibly could be older.

Tenemos en La Casa del Califa 6 aljibes tradicionales. 2 estan en uso y hace una semana restauramos el aljibe principal. El origen de la palabra ‘aljibe’ es árabe (ver abajo). El origen en inglés de ‘cistern’ es griego (ver arriba). Este aljibe tiene por lo menos 600 años pero podría ser mucho más antiguo.
