Hemos cerrado… We have closed…

… but don’t worry we open again on Friday 3rd. of February. This year we have closed ahead of the festive season as we have so much work to do on maintenance and upgrades that we felt we couldn’t do it in our usual 3 week window. Work started on Monday with 3 crews in different parts of the Califa maze. Amongst other things we are fully refurbishing 4 bathrooms in the hotel and upgrading another 2. All rooms are being painted and most of our standard doubles / twins are being partially redecorated – we are taking out desks and replacing with comfortable armchairs, improving lighting and other details. Some of our many stairways are getting new lighting and amongst the many works of art in the Califa we are hanging a 4 m. x 2m. Kazakhstani tapestry in the main restaurant entrance. The kitchen gets a second walk in fridge and we are improving the efficiency with new ovens and equipment. My favourite of the new features will be our new wine cellar in a 16th.C. barrel vaulted room which up until now we haven’t used except for storing old Coca Cola crates.  This will be visitable and visible from our main restaurant stairway. … pero no te preocupes abrimos de nuevo el viernes 3de febrero. Este año hemos cerrado antes de la temporada festiva, tenemos tanto trabajo de mantenimiento y mejoras en el hotel y el restaurante que nos pareció imposible hacerlo en nuestro

descanso habitual de 3 semanas. Los trabajos se iniciaron el lunes con tres equipos en diferentes partes del laberinto del Califa. Entre otras cosas, estamos totalmente renovado 4 cuartos de baño en el hotel y mejorando otros 2. Se pintarán todas las habitaciones  y la mayoría de nuestras habitaciones dobles estándar / gemelos están siendo parcialmente redecorado - con cómodos sillones, mejor iluminación decorativa y otros detalles. Algunas de nuestras muchas escaleras están recibiendo nueva iluminación y entre las muchas obras de arte en el Califa estamos colgando un 4m. x 2m. tapiz de Kazajstán en la entrada principal. La cocina recibe una segunda cuarto de frio y estamos mejorando la eficiencia con hornos y equipos nuevos. Mi favorita de las nuevas características será nuestra nueva bodega en una sala abovedada del siglo 16  que hasta ahora no hemos utilizado, excepto para el almacenamiento de antiguas cajas de Coca Cola. Esta será visitable y visible de nuestra escalera restaurante principal. Ver la foto de abajo.Si desea reservar una habitación o una mesa en el restaurante para el 2012 responderemos a todas los eml en 24 horas. (48hrs. el fin de semana). Las ‘mil y una noches’ y Vejer de la Frontera…

Se respiran las mil y una noches en cada rincón de este laberinto de terrazas, pasillos y zonas comunes decoradas con gusto. En algunos rincones está Oriente Próximo; en otros, el Magreb más cercano con sus olores.

El hotel nace de la unión de varias casas, la más antigua, del siglo XV, conserva su aljibe. En el pueblo la llaman la Casa del Juzgado porque la leyenda sostiene que fue sede de la Inquisición. Hoy todo es luz, paredes encaladas, sol y aire puro. Su restaurante de platos marroquíes es otra invitación al placer de los sentidos.

Aunque todas las habitaciones son amplias y están decoradas con mimo -muebles iraníes, lámparas libanesas, vasijas yemeníes o tapices marroquíes- hay una mágica. Se llama África y parece arrancada de las tierras altas de Kenia.

Central High Atlas Mountains, Morrocco, April 2011. A small team comprising of François de Pfyffer and brothers James and Duncan Stuart journey 1,000km. south from their homes near Vejer de la Frontera and Tarifa (Andalucía) to the Aït Bwgmez valley in the Atlas mountains. Their mission – a bit of charity distributing toys and children’s clothes to some of the more remote villages and to climb Morrocco’s second highest peak at 4,068m. Las montañas del Atlas Alta, Marruecos, abril de 2011. Un pequeño equipo compuesto por François de Pfyffer y los hermanos James y Duncan Stuart viajan 1.000 kilómetros. al sur desde sus casas cerca de Vejer y Tarifa  al valle de Aït Bwgmez. Su misión - un poco de caridad donando juguetes y ropa para los niños de las aldeas más remotas y para hacer una travesia invernal a Djebl M’goun a 4.068 m. el segundo pico más alta de África del norte.  Como siempre la montaña da un poco de drama para el equipo – mal tiempo, vientos fuertes y cansancio…

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of October and wished we’d booked for longer! We stayed in the “Triperia” annexe which doesn’t do it justice – it’s a separate house just a few doors down the street but you get all the benefits of the hotel. In fact, as Triperia has a lovely little pool that main hotel residents can’t use we think it’s better! The hotel restaurant is in a lovely garden and has a very exotic and romantic feel. Sunny breakfast or candelit suppers. There are also several sun terraces where you can relax and enjoy the views. Only criticism is that the staff don’t tell you about everything the hotel has when you arrive! We found things almost by mistake – such as the hotel’s fab rooftop cocktail bar and a resident’s kitchen in the Triperia house. Triperia has a “2 nights for price of 1″ midweek deal which is great value for what you get. The town is gorgeous and has amazing views. There are several nice bars and restaurants in the area.

“An exotic little gem”

Tucked away in one of the Pueblo Blanco’s of Cadiz village of Vejer de la Frontera, is this truly delightful little hotel. It is registered as a 2-Star but in reality has more charm than many a 5*.
La Casa Califa is a warren of little Hide and Seek rooms, Map rooms, Games rooms and twisty passages that hold a strong Moorish influence proving the history of ancient Vejer. The views across the rice plains down to the sea are breathtaking and it is centrally situated on the main square Plaza España with easy walking through the steep cobbled streets to discover the rest of the town and its many excellent restaurants and shops.
The Restaurant of the Califa specialises in Moroccan food serving excellent meals and has a good selection of wines. It is on the lowest level of the hotel set in a delightful evocative garden. Attached to the Califa is another building where one can enjoy afternoon Tea or a drink on the Rooftop terrace and view the quite stunning black and white artistic photo gallery.
Make a point of buying the Califa CD which will remind you of a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: The AFRICA Suite is by far the nicest, closely followed by TORRE on a shared staircase. LA PALMERA overlooks the main square and although not a Suite is very pleasant.

Calendario del Califa 2011 a 2012…

Como vuela el tiempo, una vez más tengo que avisaros del calendario para el año que viene…

Este año el complejo del Califa cierra antes que lo normal debido a que nuestra lista de mejoras y restauraciones es aún más extenso que lo normal.

Hotel La Casa del Califa, Triperia No.1 y el Jardin del Califa – cierra desde el lunes 12 de diciembre 2011 y reabrimos el viernes 3 de febrero 2012.

Hotel Madreselva, Los Caños de Meca – ahora cerrado. Reabre el viernes 30 de marzo 2012. 

Taperia del Califa. Cerramos ayer. Reapertura el viernes 30 de marzo 2012

2012 – El Jardin del Califa abre todos los días durante todo el año para tanto para almuerzos como para cenas.

It’s calendar time again… how time flies. Anyway a few dates for your diary.

This year the Califa closes earlier than usual as our ongoing time consuming restoration and improvements of the building are larger than usual.

Hotel La Casa del Califa, Triperia No.1 & Jardin del Califa – closed from Monday 12th. December to Friday  3rd. February 2012 (opens for dinner on Friday the 3rd.).

Hotel Madreselva – now closed. Reopens 30 March.

Taperia del Califa. Closed yesterday. Reopens 30 March.

2012 – The Jardin del Califa will open every day throughout the year for both lunch and dinner through until our final annual closing date.

Other dates: Easter week (Semana Santa) 01-08 April, Toro Embolao (Running of the bulls) 08 April, Spring Fair 18-22 April, Candela San Juan (Toro de Fuego) 23 June, Velada de Agosto (Summer Fair) 10-24 August.
